CCTV footage shows a scuffle between a security reaction officer and suspect.

A break-in suspect was declared dead on scene after being surprised by an EPR reaction officer in the early hours of the morning.

EPR quickly responded to an urgent call-out to a house in Warwick Street at around 4am this morning, 30 September

“The EPR reaction officer inspected the premises after an attempted break-in also had been reported at the same premises at around 1.45am this morning, but the suspects fled the scene,” said Johan Krogh, EPR West Rand general manager.

While inspecting the premises for a second time, the officer noticed a suspect close to an open window. He instructed the suspect to go down on his knees.

However, the suspect charged towards the reaction officer, and a struggle for the firearm ensued.

The EPR officer managed to fire a shot that fatally wounded the suspect, who died shortly afterwards.

“What could have been yet another break-in or robbery or a very serious attack on a family in Warwick Street, ended in a struggle between one of our reaction officers and a suspect over the reaction officer’s firearm. Well done RO Harmse for putting your life in danger to protect the lives of others. We salute you,” concluded Krogh
