Last night from 23:00, four security guards were on duty at Ntuzuma Pick and Pay when they were approached by a group of armed suspects. The security guards were tied up and locked inside a toilet. The Suspects entered the building through a ceiling and at about 02:00 this morning while they were still inside, the police were notified and responded to a business robbery in progress. As police approached the scene, it is alleged that the suspects fired shots towards the members and the member’s retaliated fatally wounding one suspect. The other suspects managed to flee the scene. The police recovered an unlicensed Norinco pistol from the scene. It appears that nothing was taken from the building and a case of armed robbery, attempted murder as well as possession of unlicensed firearm was opened at Ntuzuma police station for further investigation.

The KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised the police officers for their swift reaction to the business robbery complaint. ‘We vowed that we will not be intimidated by the criminals whilst performing our duties. We will work around the clock tracing those suspects who fled the scene and we are appealing to the public to give us information about their whereabouts, she said.
